Batter Up! Telling Sports Stories With Trading Cards
Activity Description
Sports fans often focus on a player's statistics, such as wins and home runs, but there's another way to look at a child's favorite athletes. Athletes star as characters in the stories of their lives and accomplishments. In The Unforgettable Season by Phil Bildner, children learn how Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams became part of baseball history. The Trading Card Creator guides children to analyze both men and the events that defined them.
Why This Is Helpful
Characters are the engines that keep stories moving. This exercise helps children think critically about DiMaggio and Williams as characters, who have backgrounds, actions, reactions, and interactions. The?a href="http://www.kar-san.com/files/resources/interactives/trading_cards_2/" target="_blank">Trading Card Creator also can serve as a prewriting exercise that helps children plan their own character-driven stories.
